The Benefits of an Ayurvedic Cleanse

The Benefits of an Ayurvedic Cleanse

The Benefits of an Ayurvedic Cleanse

All of us can benefit from an Ayurvedic Cleanse. To prove this, just imagine a day in the life of your kitchen sink. Every day it drains away all of your left-overs and trash. Now think what would start happening if the pipes became blocked, and the water wasn't flowing. Can you see the sludge building up from the vegetable rinds, the uneaten toast, the kids' cereal, and the oil from yesterday's cook-out? Can you smell the rotten stagnation and toxicity if all this just sat there for 3 months? Are you disgusted yet? Then you see the need for an Ayurvedic cleanse.

Like it or not, all of us are that kitchen sink to some degree. The gunk that builds up is referred to in Ayurveda as ama (impurities, toxic waste. Making healthy diet and lifestyle choices definitely helps reduce the amount of ama that builds up, but there is so much more that is involved and an Ayurvedic Cleanse is a great starting point.

The systems in our body that remove wastes (stool, urine, and sweat) must be working effectively.
Particularly of importance is the colon, as this is where so much of what we intake gets processed, and the potential for ama building up is tremendous. The easiest way to start assessing the health of your colon is to look at the quality of your bowel movements. Do you have regular, daily bowel movements? Do you have to strain to pass the stool? Does your stool or flatulence have a foul odor? While all ongoing problems should be evaluated by your health care provider, many unhealthy bowel habits are a sign, from an Ayurvedic perspective, that ama has built up in the colon.

Can you think of other indicators that ama has accumulated? What signs would you assume could be related to waste material not being properly disposed? Foul odors, including body odor and smelly urine can be a sign. Feeling tired and sluggish, even after getting adequate sleep, could be associated with ama build-up. A foggy, clouded feeling in the mind may indicate ama. Even the muscles and joints may feel tired and not fully functional.

You may be thinking that you can just learn to live with the ama, and that it's not "that bad". The issue is that the continual build-up of ama leads to blocking of the channels of the body, eventually causing poor health from an Ayurvedic perspective. Think of a stagnant body of water, like a pond. You start seeing the formation of algae, and even think that this is a part of the natural cycle, adding "character" to the pond. But as the water remains still, and the ecosystem is not kept in check, the algae begin to overgrow, and even choke out other life. Even more, the stagnant water becomes an incubator for bacteria and parasites, and a breeding ground for mosquitoes carrying dangerous diseases. A river, whose nature is to flow and constantly flush away any signs of stagnation, doesn't face these problems as easily. Similarly, you want there to be proper flow in the body-of blood, lymph, air, food through the digestive tract, and ultimately, of wastes leaving the body. And because there isn't always this free flow for a variety of reasons, an Ayurvedic cleanse gives your body an opportunity to step back, stop facing an onslaught on new toxins, address the toxins that have built up, and rid the body of them.

The most well known type of Ayurvedic cleanse is called Panchakarma. A complete Panchakarma treatment should be undertaken only under the supervision of a Ayurvedic practitioner. The body is prepared for cleansing with a change to a simple, whole foods diet, as well as massage with oil and mild sweating therapies. The person also takes a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily activities, allowing the body the time and space to go through a cleansing process. Then, based on the individual's constitution and imbalances, a regimen is created involving one or more of five processes: herbal enemas, emesis, purgation, blood-letting, and herbal nasal remedies. Herbal remedies simultaneously guide the body through the process. There are also a multitude of other therapies that can be done in conjunction with these, with the goal being to rid the body of harmful build-up, re-balance the doshas, and strengthen the digestive fire. The person is then given help to rejuvenate and rebuild the tissues.

These very goals can be translated into smaller cleanses, less rigorous in nature, which can be undertaken even at home. The purposes of a home Ayurvedic cleanse can be as follows:

To give the digestive fire a rest from all the exposures it must process continuously, so that it can re-kindle itself.
To halt the input of materials toxic to the health.
To cleanse the body of stagnant build-up, allowing the life energy to flow freely once more.
To balance any imbalances in the constitutional doshas.
To step away from the daily routine of life, which may include some undesirable habits, and get a breath of fresh air and fresh perspective.
To nourish and rejuvenate the body, bringing forth well-being once again.

In addition to when you feel overburdened by unhealthy build-up, Ayurveda recommends cleansing at various points. The transition of the seasons is a common recommendation, so as to re-balance any doshas that may have become exaggerated during the previous season, and to also prepare for the upcoming changes in nature. Ayurveda also promotes cleansing before attempting pregnancy, as this allows the body's tissues to gain clarity and vitality. There are even complex cleansing rituals, lasting several months in isolation, done to regain youthful vigor and mental acuity.

What Can I Do Now?

A gentle way to experience the Ayurvedic cleanse process is to start with a whole-food based cleanse at home. Two of the simplest whole foods to digest in Ayurveda are Basmati rice and split yellow mung dal (lentils), cooked with vegetables and helpful spices such as turmeric, mustard seed, and cumin seed, and topped with the nourishing goodness of ghee (clarified butter). This grounding food (called kitchadi) used in combination with plenty of warm water sipped throughout the day, and an herbal remedy such as Triphala to make sure the wastes are removed from the system, can form the basis of a very easy home cleanse.

One should not use the food articles from either attachment or ignorance; rather he should use the wholesome one after examination because the body is a product of food. -Caraka Samhita
Caraka Samhita. Sharma, P.V. Sutrasthana Ch XXVIII, V. 41

There are also numerous Ayurvedic practitioners around the world who can see you in consultation and help guide you through processes from a home food cleanse to a full Panchakarma.

The ABC's of Time Management

The ABC's of Time Management

The ABC's of Time Management

Time Management. This seems to be the focus of the 90s and probably the new millenium as well. We have more time saving devices available to us yet we seem to have less time. We spend millions of dollars annually on time management books and seminars but we still seem to have too much to do in too little time.

I have made a career of time management. No, Im not a time management consultant, just a busy executive longing to find more time in every day. And over the years I have discovered that there seems to be four key elements to effective time management skills:

1. An accurate understanding of how long tasks really take to complete.
2. A single focus on the goal or task at hand.
3. Efficient uses of small amounts of time you dont even realize you have
4. More efficient ways of completing the more mundane, but necessary tasks in your life.

1. An accurate understanding of how long tasks really take to complete

Ive been managing people for over 15 years and I have found that those who share poor time management skills have one thing in common: they have NO idea how long activities really take them to complete. For example, I once managed a woman who was going to go to Starbucks on her 15-minute break to get a caf?mocha. Starbucks was a 20-minute drive from the office, one way!! She insisted it was a five-minute drive. It wasnt. Many who are habitually late underestimate how long they spend getting ready to leave the house or how much time their drive will take.

So the first key to time management is to obtain a REALISTIC estimate of the time it takes you to accomplish most of the tasks you perform every day. The only way to do this is to time them! Next time you leave for work in the morning, look at your watch the minute you get into the car. When you arrive at work, look at your watch again. How much time lapsed? If you are time challenged I bet you will be surprised at how long it really took. When you get out of bed in the morning, look at the clock. When youre ready to leave the house, look at the clock again. How much time lapsed? When you begin to clean the house, look at the clock. When youre through, look at the clock again. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. The objective is to take a typical day in your life and clock everything you do.

Its probably a good idea to jot your findings down. Keep a log of the time it took you to get to work, to leave the house or to do your weekly cleaning, etc. etc. Once you have a REALISTIC perspective of your actual time requirements, then you can begin to plan your day in accordance with the priorities you've established for yourself. Remember NOT to underestimate your time when you plan. Refer to your time log and learn how to say no so that you do not over commit yourself.

2. A single focus on the goal or task at hand.

This is a BIG ONE! So many time challenged individuals do not even realize that when they get little accomplished its because they have been easily distracted from their goals. An example of this is when you say youre going to clean out the closet. In the course of doing so you find some old photo albums which you spend a significant amount of time looking through (although youll swear you only spent an hour looking at the albums!). At the end of the day you discover that the contents of the closet are all over the floor around you and that you are no farther along in your efforts to clean it out. So you put everything back and sincerely wonder why you made no progress at all!

If youre going to clean out the closet, clean out the closet! Do NOT allow yourself to become distracted by the contents within it. If you were going to drive from your house to the grocery store, would you turn down streets that wouldnt get you there? Would you deter along the way? Probably not So why do it with any project youre going to undertake. This principle can be applied equally to your work environment and your home environment. Choose a task and stayed focused on only that task until it is completed or until your allotted time has run out.

3. Efficient uses of small amounts of time you dont even realize you have.

This is my favorite strategy of all. It has become somewhat of a game to me. Im constantly trying to find ways to be productive with the few minutes here and there that Id normally waste. For instance, I purchased a cordless phone. It turned out to be (as Id hoped it would) the BEST investment Ive ever made with respect to accomplishing more with the time I have. Whenever I talk to anyone on the phone and ESPECIALLY when Ive been left on hold, I wipe down the kitchen sink, the kitchen counters, the microwave oven, the stove top, the refrigerator shelves, the bathroom sinks or the bathroom mirrors. Or, I may do the dishes or throw in a load of laundry or two.

I dont know about you but I find I am constantly struggling with clutter and things that are out of place. So, whenever I walk from one room to another I take something with me to put away.

From time to time I find myself waiting, waiting for my son, waiting for my husband, waiting for the babysitter, waiting for the phone repairperson or just waiting. So once again I use those previously wasted moments to pick up toys, put away folded laundry or clean out the refrigerator. Commercials are another great source of time. Remember that there are LOTS of chores around the house that CAN be done in 2 or 3 minutes. If you take advantage of those moments youll find you can do more in seemingly less time.

Lastly, dont forget to make productive use of the time you spend in the dentist or doctors?waiting rooms. Be sure to take all the reading you want to catch up on or your bills to pay. You could decide to take your cookbooks or recipe cards to plan the next weeks meals and your grocery list at the same time.

Write those letters youve intended to write. The point is to remember to make efficient use of the small amounts of time you dont even realize you have.

4. More efficient ways of completing the more mundane, but necessary tasks in your life.

This strategy is really about devising better (i.e. quicker) methods to get things done. Since housecleaning is the one thing thats probably universally dreaded, Ill use it as an example again. Ive chosen this example specifically because if youre doing something you ENJOY you really dont want to rush through it, do it more efficiently or do it in the small amounts of time you dont even realize you have. The point is to FREE up time from the have tos?so that you can give more time to the want tos?.

If you want to clean your home more quickly (to save time to do more of the things you enjoy) than you must reduce scrubbing! Youll notice that the goal of all of the housecleaning methods below is to eliminate it entirely. Scrubbing, I have decided, is the root of all evil (okay, not really but it does take up a tremendous amount of time!) Additionally, youll discover that the majority of the following tips are focused in the bathroom and kitchen areas. This is because these areas, more so than any other part of the house, seem to be the most time consuming to clean.

Using an inexpensive shower squeegee wipe down the shower doors after every shower and save oodles of time cleaning and scrubbing. To clean white grout or caulking around the bathtub, soak paper towels in bleach and lay them directly on the affected area. Walk away, or do something else for about a half-hour or more. Remove the paper towels to find the grout and caulking clean and white. To clean the bottom of the bathtub fill it with just enough water to cover, add bleach and let it soak. A half-hour or an hour later, come back to let the water out and enjoy the sparkling clean bathtub bottom. For mildew and soap scum, there are no better products than Scrub Free.

The Scrub Free SOAP SCUM product also works well on faucets. Put as much in the dishwasher as you possibly can. Load it with pots and pans, Tupperware, spatulas, you name it, just about everything except china and crystal. Some pots and pans may not be suitable for the dishwasher so be sure to use discretion. And obviously youll have to run the dishwasher more so the cost of running that should be balanced against the benefit you gain in time saved.

Use rubbing alcohol to clean stainless steel sinks, bleach to clean ceramic sinks. (I love bleach have you noticed?)

Dust less often, unless someone in your family has allergy problems. Vacuum tile, hardwood or vinyl floors weekly. Scrub them bi weekly or monthly. These are just a few of the household hints that have saved me hours of time throughout the years. Remember, the objective is to spend as little time as possible on those mundane yet necessary tasks in your life. I have illustrated my point using housecleaning as an example but really this can apply to any area.

Im sure if you analyze some of the less enjoyable chores you do, you too, can find more efficient methods to complete them.

As you have seen, time management is about:
1. An accurate understanding of how long tasks really take to complete.
2. A single focus on the goal or task at hand.
3. Efficient uses of small amounts of time you dont even realize you have
4. More efficient ways of completing the more mundane, but necessary tasks in your life

But ultimately, the real goal of time management is to organize your days more effectively so that you can create more time for yourself and the things that you enjoy! I have.

Taking the Cus out of Customer Service Why Ask Why

Taking the Cus out of Customer Service Why Ask Why

Taking the Cus out of Customer Service Why Ask Why

Customers are always asking for something. When we first launched our software company, every time a customer would ask for something it did a couple things:
It would shoot the requested feature to the top of our mental priorities, since here it was in realtime right before us: a real customer asking for a real feature.
We would feel bummed that we didnt yet have the feature.
Our immediate reaction dictated our response:
Reaction: Well competitor x and competitor y both have this feature. We need it too!
Response: We hope to have this feature soon! Thanks for your feedback and patience.
Then one day, some customer was asking for some random feature, and we were going about our standard routine (adding it and haphazardly prioritizing it in our overwhelming list of features we needed to have) when one of our team members made the divine suggestion, Why dont you ask WHY they need this?
The results not only changed the way we develop our product roadmap, sharpening our knowledge of WHY we should add certain features and functionality and leave others out, but it completely changed the dynamic of our customer interactions. It engaged our customers to think rather than wait.
So, now when a customer asks for something, this is our response:
WHY do you want this feature? WHAT does this look like within our software? HOW does this help you to become more productive?

It is always one of three results that occur:

1. The customer does not respond to our questions. Hmmmm.. apparently theyre tongue-tied.

2. Their response is a self-declaring answer arguing against the importance of their own request. They convince us (and themselves) that what theyre asking for is a want (at best) and definitely not a need. They actually talk themselves out of theyre own request and make it quite clear that this has no business being on our product roadmap.

3. They articulate exactly WHY they need this feature, WHAT it would look like being implemented into Rule, and HOW it will truly make them more productive. Bingo! Now, add that to our wish list too.

When it comes to developing software, its not about the kitchen sinkits about value. Which leads us to the customers dilema: a desire for a solution with only a vague understanding of the problem.

I have to manage my team which includes customer relationships and project management. I have this software that we use to manage customers and projects, and we also depend on email, but our team is still not on the same page. We have work activity for projects with discussions all over the placefrom email to the software. We have the same thing for customers and I cant see how everything relates.

Customers are helping to identify the problem that cloud collaboration & project management software is trying to solve.

Like a rock laced with gold, raw feedback needs to be refined. We dont want to appease demanding customerswe want to figure them out. Theres pain in work. We all have some symptoms. We all have some points. True customer service is a two-way road: discovering the problem together and working on a solution together. Well never be in the business of telling customers what they need without listening to what they want. Nor will we return to the mindless nod of, Yeah well have thateventually.

We ask WHY.

Stocking the Kitchen in Your Brand New Home

Stocking the Kitchen in Your Brand New Home

Stocking the Kitchen in Your Brand New Home

With so many first time buyers entering the exciting world of home buying at this time, there are many people who are looking at stocking a whole home instead of just their portion of a shared residence. One of the most important areas to stock in your new home is the kitchen; a poorly set up kitchen is a struggle to cook in and you will spend more in take out in a short time than you would have spent in just buying what you need to comfortably cook with.

No matter what kind of cooking you actually do, there are some general basics that are useful for any kitchen; and even if you have some of these items already, it's nice to have new things for your new house, especially if you've been using the castoffs that your family donated to you when you moved out.

One of the nicest things that you can treat yourself to when you buy a new house is a new set of dishes; buy at least a set of four place settings in a style and colour that you like and you think would go nicely with your dining area. If you don't have a decently complete set of cutlery, buy one of these too; no one likes having to share the one teaspoon in the house with everyone else.

For actual kitchen work, get at minimum one frying pan; a good sized cast iron one is a great value and pretty inexpensive. You will also probably need one large pot that you can boil pasta in; a Dutch oven is a good size for pasta and doubles for making stew or soup as well. Add to this combination one medium and one small sauce pan, all with lids.

For food preparation you will need a good paring knife, one larger utility knife, and a serrated bread knife. This variety of knife sizes will let you prepare just about anything. A sharpening steel is a good idea to keep your knives sharp but if you aren't that adept at sharpening knives by hand consider buying "stay sharp" knives. To accompany your new knives, invest in a good sized wooden cutting board; wooden cutting boards prohibit bacterial growth and don't dull your kitchen knives.

Whether you bake or not, invest in a good sized cookie sheet; you can cook a variety of things in the oven on one, ranging from baking actual cookies to toasting frozen things. Also handy, even if you don't know how to bake-yet-are measuring spoons and cups and some basic baking pans. A small cake pan is handy for baking small meals in and a loaf pan is great for making meatloaf in.

Don't forget those vital gadgets that make everyday cooking easier as well; it can be frustrating to be all ready to cook your first meal in a new place and realise that you're missing a can opener or a cork screw. A basic selection of cooking utensils will help round out your kitchen tools as well.

These items should make basic cooking quite workable in your new home; if you are a more advanced cook then you will likely want to add some more specialized items to your list as well. There are many small kitchen appliances that can also make cooking in your new kitchen easier as well including: coffee makers, mixers, toasters, and food processors. Add to your collection slowly and truly consider what kinds of cooking that you do to determine what your needs are before buying a lot of gadgetry. The purchase of a new home can be an ideal opportunity to start putting together a quality kitchen set up!

Stewarding Department How to Clean the Kitchen Stove

The Stewarding Department needs to make sure that they have cleaning schedules properly in placed. It is also important that people are trained on how to clean the kitchen stove. After all, this is practically the most important kitchen equipment. People who clean it should know how to properly do the task. Also, they should know how to save time when cleaning. Of course, the best way to do this is to make sure it is clean regularly. The person assigned to cleaning them should not let them get too dirty before he or she would bother cleaning the stove, counter and other cooking surfaces.

We all Know Stoves Are Tough to Clean

In restaurants, cleaning stewards should make sure that they are armed with cleaning supplies, like glass cleaners or stove cleaners, at all times. Anyone who has ever been given the task of cleaning a kitchen can tell you that the most dreaded task is cleaning the stove or oven. Often, the hardest thing to clean is food that cooks over and spills onto the stove surface. This kind of mess simply doesnt come off easily. Without a good cleaning product, it will be hard to clean them. It is important that you get cleaning products that are designed to clean up this kind of mess, especially dirt that is tough to clean.

How to Clean the Stove

Ideally, it should be the kitchens policy for chefs to clean as soon as they cook, so that dirt and mess wont pile up. Kitchen surfaces, including the stove, should be clean with soap and water. Sometimes, the stove becomes dirtier than usual then the Stewarding Department should make sure that it is cleaned properly and restored to its functional state.

Remember to check the stoves cleaning manual first before cleaning anything so as to avoid ruining any component. You should also avoid using steel when cleaning your stove. Opt for plastic or brass instead. So, how do you clean the stove?

Wipe away crumbs or debris with soft cloth or sponge.
Remove the grates and drip plates. Place them inside the kitchen sink filled with dish soap and hot water. Leave them soaking overnight if needed.
Soak removable parts in dish soap and hot water overnight to loosen food debris stuck on the surfaces.
Remove food debris underneath the stove.
Scrub clean the grates and dip plates after they have been soaked.
Rinse everything completely with clean water and pat dry with soft cloth.

It is important that your Stewarding Department should know simple procedures like this so that you will be able to properly instruct people assigned to cleaning your hotels kitchen.
